Palermo Airport: From Punta Raisi to Falcone Borsellino
A History of the Airport Serving Sicily's Capital
The international airport serving Palermo, the capital of Sicily, has undergone several name changes throughout its history. Originally known as Punta Raisi Airport, it was later renamed Palermo Airport. In 1995, it was renamed again in honor of Giovanni Falcone and Paolo Borsellino, two anti-mafia judges who were assassinated by the Sicilian Mafia in 1992. Today, the airport is officially known as Palermo-Punta Raisi "Falcone e Borsellino" Airport (IATA: PMO).
Punta Raisi Airport: The Early Years
Punta Raisi Airport was built in the 1950s to serve the growing tourism industry in Sicily. The airport was located in the Punta Raisi district, about 30 kilometers from Palermo. In the 1960s, the airport was expanded to accommodate the increasing number of tourists visiting Sicily.
